Parkway's Legacy
It was in 1956 that 119 "pioneers" gathered to charter Parkway Presbyterian Church. These hardy souls had been meeting at St. Martin's Episcopal School for a year and were in the midst of Parkway's first building project. It was the height of the "baby boom" and Metairie, Louisiana was experiencing unprecedented growth due to the oil industry and economic "good times" in the Greater New Orleans area.

These charter members started this fledgling church to express their faith and hope - faith in God, hope for the future.  They were confident their gift would be valued, yet could not have imagined how their church's ministry would grow, expanding to serve not just the congregation, but people throughout the community and the world. Much has changed since then in Metairie. Open spaces, shell roads, marsh land, and farms have given way to paved streets and boulevards, rows of houses, apartment complexes, shopping centers, and yes, the New Orleans Saints! The population has soared, traffic has increased and the rural area has matured into a city.

Through it all, Parkway Presbyterian Church has held true to its mission of spreading God's love through the community as disciples of Jesus Christ. Parkway's congregation shares the same love and dedication that our charter members expressed over four decades ago when they sang "The Church's One Foundation" while breaking the rich earth for the new building and professing their commitment to serve the Lord.
